A Canal Holiday
A holiday on the canals offers the ultimate opportunity to relax in peaceful, rural surroundings, and to unwind as the boat travels at a walking pace, far from our busy modern world. Yet it can be active and energetic as well if you choose a route with plenty of locks. You have the freedom to travel when you want to, to moor (almost) anywhere, to walk, to fish, to explore canal side villages and attractions or just be totally lazy!
Each turn of the canal reveals a different view, and there is time to savour each one. There is plenty to keep children occupied too. There are features of the canal to look out for - bridges, locks, aqueducts and tunnels. There is lots of wildlife - ducks, herons, swans and dragonflies are common, and if you are lucky you might spot a grebe, kingfisher or water vole. And you can all feel a sense of achievement in helping to work the locks.
If you work up a thirst at the locks, every canal side village has a pub, and sometimes you can moor right outside! These pubs often provide excellent meals; alternatively you can stock up at the village shop.
Moor up in the evening near civilisation or away from it - either way you will sleep well after all the fresh air and adventures of the day, lulled by pleasant waterway sounds around you.
At first sight, the cost of hiring a boat may seem high, but remember that it provides not only your accommodation but also your entertainment - you are not for ever paying out for extras or petrol. Just save a little for souvenirs on your return to Pitstone!
